Meetup.com Groups
The following Meetup.com groups generally have a more formal leadership, so they are a great place to start for people looking for a more structured hiking environment.
- Slow and Steady Hikers: A large, well-established Calgary club (over 14,000 members) covering everything from relaxed walks to backpacking trips and scrambles. Despite the "slow and steady" name, the actual pace and difficulty depend on each organizer—events run up to T3/OT3 terrain, and the harder trips require an electronic waiver, proper gear, and self-assessed fitness. Each organizer vets participants, and popular trips sometimes have a waitlist.
- Calgary Nature and Social Adventures: A very active, paid social club (around $12/year after a 14-day trial) geared toward singles and couples who want to meet people through shared activities. Hiking is only part of the mix—it also runs snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, cycling, paddling, potlucks, and restaurant meetups—so it's a better fit if you're after a broad social calendar than if you're strictly looking for hiking partners.
- Calgary/Banff Hiking, X-C Skiing, and Snowshoeing: A year-round outdoor group (over 8,500 members) running hikes, scrambles, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing across Calgary, Banff, and Kananaskis. Trips are graded by difficulty (e.g. D4, OT3, OT4) and range from gentler outings to routes that need a strong level of fitness. You join through Meetup, agree to the waiver and guidelines, and sign up per event.
