Want to sleep close to the trailhead? This page covers the three main ways to do it — campgrounds, hostels, and backcountry huts — plus how the booking systems work and which spots are reservable versus first-come, first-served.

🗓️ How Booking Works

• Parks Canada (National Parks) publishes the reservation launch dates in November or December for the following summer. Reservations launch on different dates for each park, usually spread between mid-January and mid-February.

• Alberta Parks (Provincial Parks) uses a rolling-window system: reservations open 90 days in advance for individual and backcountry camping, and 180 days in advance for group and comfort camping.

• BC Parks takes reservations through camping.bcparks.ca on a rolling window — check the site for the current booking window.
• US National Park Service (NPS) — in particular Montana's Glacier National Park just south of the border — uses a rolling window with reservations up to 6 months in advance.

🏕️ Frontcountry Campgrounds & Hostels by Area

These are all frontcountry campgrounds — car-accessible, drive-up sites you use as a basecamp, not backcountry sites you hike into. (For huts you hike to, see Backcountry Huts below.)

The areas below mirror the Popular Locations weather page, so you can line up the forecast with a place to sleep. For each area, the important campgrounds are grouped by how you get a spot:

• Reservable — book ahead through the operator's reservation system (see above).
• First-come, first-served (FCFS) — no reservations; you claim a site in person, so arrive early on summer weekends.

Bragg Creek & Elbow Valley

There's no campground at West Bragg Creek itself — the nearest basecamps sit along Highway 66 (Elbow Valley) and at McLean Creek. (Highway 66 is gated in winter.)

• Reservable — McLean Creek (year-round), Little Elbow, Paddy's Flat (also has FCFS sites)
• First-come, first-served — Beaver Flats

Canmore and North Kananaskis

All in Bow Valley Provincial Park (Alberta Parks), near Exshaw/Seebe. There's no frontcountry campground at Barrier Lake itself — it's a day-use trailhead.

• Reservable — Bow Valley, Willow Rock, and others
• First-come, first-served — Three Sisters
• Hostels — HI Kananaskis Wilderness Hostel (Ribbon Creek, down Highway 40 — the main hostel basecamp for both North and South Kananaskis)

South Kananaskis

Spread across Peter Lougheed, Spray Valley, and Sheep River provincial parks (Alberta Parks).

• Reservable — Elkwood, Lower Lake, Interlakes, and Boulton Creek (Peter Lougheed PP); Sandy McNabb (Sheep River PP)
• First-come, first-served — Canyon and Mount Sarrail (walk-in tents, Peter Lougheed PP); Eau Claire and Spray Lakes West (Spray Valley PP); Bluerock (Sheep River PP)
• Hostels — HI Kananaskis Wilderness Hostel (Ribbon Creek, Highway 40)

Banff, Lake Louise, and Yoho

Banff National Park — camping & booking

• Reservable — Tunnel Mountain (Village I & II and Trailer Court), Two Jack Lakeside, Two Jack Main (Banff townsite); Johnston Canyon, Castle Mountain, Protection Mountain (Bow Valley Parkway); Lake Louise (tent & trailer). All Banff and Lake Louise frontcountry campgrounds are reservable.

Yoho National Park, BC — camping & booking

• Reservable — Kicking Horse, Takakkaw Falls (walk-in, tents only), Monarch (FCFS in shoulder season)
• First-come, first-served — Hoodoo Creek

• Hostels — HI Banff Alpine Centre, HI Lake Louise Alpine Centre, HI Castle Mountain Wilderness Hostel (Bow Valley Parkway). Note: HI Yoho / Whiskey Jack is temporarily closed — verify before relying on it.

Abraham Lake, Nordegg, and Saskatchewan River Crossing

David Thompson Country (Nordegg / Abraham Lake) — Alberta Parks

• Reservable — Fish Lake / Shunda Lake recreation area (book via Alberta Parks); Crescent Falls (also has FCFS sites)

Icefields Parkway — Banff National Park — camping & booking

• Reservable — Rampart Creek, Silverhorn Creek
• First-come, first-served — Mosquito Creek, Waterfowl Lakes

Icefields Parkway & Jasper — Jasper National Park — camping & booking

• Reservable — Whistlers, Wapiti, Miette (townsite area)
• First-come, first-served — Snaring (townsite); Wilcox, Columbia Icefield (tents) and the Icefields Centre RV lot, Jonas Creek, Honeymoon Lake, Mount Kerkeslin (along the Parkway)

• Hostels — HI Nordegg / Shunda Creek; along the Icefields Parkway: HI Mosquito Creek, HI Rampart Creek, HI Hilda Creek (group rental only), and HI Beauty Creek. Note: HI Jasper, HI Athabasca Falls, and HI Maligne Canyon were lost or closed in the 2024 wildfire.

Waterton Lakes

Waterton Lakes National Park — camping & booking

• Reservable — Townsite (FCFS in shoulder season)
• First-come, first-served — Belly River
• Crandell Mountain was destroyed in the 2017 Kenow wildfire and is being rebuilt — confirm status before counting on it.
• Hostels — none; Hostelling International has no property in Waterton.

Crowsnest Pass

Crowsnest Pass & Castle region — Alberta Parks

• Reservable — Chinook Lake; Beaver Mines Lake, Castle Falls, and Castle River Bridge (Castle PP)
• First-come, first-served — Lynx Creek and the numbered designated camping areas (Castle PP camping index)
• Hostels — none nearby.

Other BC National Parks

Glacier National Park, BC (Rogers Pass) — camping & booking

• Reservable — Loop Brook; Illecillewaet (roughly half reservable, half FCFS)
• Mount Sir Donald is closed until further notice.

Mount Revelstoke National Park — camping & booking

• Reservable — Snowforest (the park's only frontcountry campground; hard-sided units, and walk-in tent sites have been temporarily unavailable — verify)

Near Revelstoke (BC Parks) — Martha Creek and Blanket Creek, both a mix of reservable and FCFS sites.

Golden, BC — the practical basecamp for Golden is the Yoho National Park campgrounds just east of town (see Banff, Lake Louise, and Yoho above).

• Hostels — no Hostelling International property in Rogers Pass, Revelstoke, or Golden; the nearest (HI Yoho / Whiskey Jack) is temporarily closed.

Glacier National Park, Montana (USA)

Just across the border, and a popular cross-border objective for the community. Reservable sites book on Recreation.gov on a rolling window (see the NPS reservation campgrounds and first-come, first-served pages).

• Reservable — Apgar, Fish Creek, Sprague Creek, Avalanche (Going-to-the-Sun Road corridor); Rising Sun, St. Mary (east); Many Glacier
• First-come, first-served — Bowman Lake, Kintla Lake, Logging Creek, Quartz Creek (North Fork, unpaved roads), and Cut Bank (east) — all small and quick to fill; arrive early
• Two Medicine (normally reservable) is closed for the 2026 season for construction — verify before planning around it.
• Hostels — Hostelling International has no property in Montana. (A US park entrance pass is required; a separate vehicle/timed-entry reservation was not required as of the 2026 season, but confirm on nps.gov/glac.)

🛖 Backcountry Huts

• The Alpine Club of Canada operates a network of backcountry huts throughout the Rockies and beyond. They use a rolling-window system: reservations open 6 months in advance for ACC members, and 3 months in advance for non-members.
